A senior Hamas official told NBC News that the U.S. must now pressure Israel to reach a cease-fire agreement before Ramadan next week, after the militant group presented its proposal for a new hostage release deal at talks in Cairo.
A Hamas delegation took part in a new round of talks with mediators in the Egyptian capital and now awaits a response from Israel, senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said.
"It is now up to the Americans if they are serious about securing a ceasefire before Ramadan to put enough pressure on the Israelis," he said.
Earlier, Israeli media reported that Israel boycotted Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo on Sunday after the Palestinian group Hamas rejected its demand for a full list of hostages still alive.
A Hamas delegation travelled to Cairo for the talks, which had been heralded as a possible final hurdle to an agreement that would halt fighting for six weeks. But by early evening there was no trace of the Israelis.
