The era of Western dominance has indeed definitively ended. Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy, wrote about this in his blog.
In his opinion, relations with the countries of the Global South also testify to this.
"The Global South" encompasses very different realities, but it nevertheless raises a real problem. If the current global geopolitical tensions continue to develop in a "West versus the rest" direction, Europe's future risks being bleak. The era of Western dominance has indeed come to a definitive end. Although this was clear in theory, we have not always drawn all the practical conclusions from this new reality," the EU diplomatic chief said.
The EU diplomatic chief said the combination of the war in Ukraine and the war in Gaza had greatly increased this risk, as developments in the Sahel and elsewhere in Africa have shown.
"Many in the Global South accuse us of 'double standards'. Russia has managed to take advantage of the situation, although its war of aggression against Ukraine is generally imperialist and colonialist. We need to fight back against this narrative, but we also need to address this issue beyond words: in the coming months, we must make a huge effort to regain the trust of our partners," Borrell said.
The stakes for EU security are also very high in the Middle East, he said.
"If we do not help end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and finally realise the two-state solution, this conflict risks setting the entire region on fire. The consequences for Europe will be profound in many ways: migration, terrorism, internal tensions, an energy crisis, interrupted sea lanes, as we are already seeing in the Red Sea...," the EU diplomatic chief said.
