Heavy rains that hit the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo last weekend killed at least 40 people, many more are missing, reports Globo.
As noted, 39 of the 40 deaths were recorded in the municipality of San Sebastian, another in the municipality of Ubatuba, where a seven-year-old girl was killed.
The power and water supply, as well as the operation of cellular communications were disrupted in several communities in the state of São Paulo. Landslides blocked traffic on several major highways in the state.
According to Brazil's Civil Defense Service, four municipalities in the state received more than a month's worth of rainfall on Saturday and Sunday. A state of emergency was declared in six municipalities.
The hardest-hit San Sebastian received 627 millimeters of precipitation - twice the norm for the whole of February. There, according to the mayor of the city, fifty houses were destroyed.
The volume of precipitation in Bertiogues - 683 millimeters in 24 hours - was a record in the history of Brazil.
