Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said Tuesday that he held a meeting in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, and the two sides discussed further strengthening political and economic cooperation between the countries.
"Turkey is interested in strengthening ties with Israel, and we talked about expanding political and economic cooperation as well as the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Warming relations between the countries is of strategic interest. It will strengthen Israel's position and contribute to stability in the region," Cohen said in a statement on his official Twitter account.
Israel and Turkey are going through a period of gradual improvement in bilateral relations, which sharply deteriorated in 2010 after an incident with the seizure by Israeli special forces of a ship leaving Turkey for the Gaza Strip. Earlier, the countries reappointed ambassadors and restored diplomatic relations.
